What if you could get your race number without going through the draw?
Why did we decide to change?
Every year 10,000 runners come to Chamonix to take part in the Mont Blanc Marathon. To ensure that we can continue to enjoy this incredible playground for many years to come, we've decided to introduce a different registration system this year. This way, we can reduce the environmental impact of the event, thanks to your help! We'll tell you why!
As inhabitants of the valley, we are privileged witnesses to climate change. The carbon footprint of the event, carried out with the AIR Coop agency in 2023, is indisputable: 96% of the carbon footprint is linked to the transport of participants (home/Chamonix journey). A colossal proportion, which comes as no surprise.
So, to reduce these figures together, we've been working on a completely new system for allocating race numbers for the 2025 edition. The main objective is to encourage the use of public transport to come to Chamonix, and to favour those who take the plunge!
Runners who come to the Mont-Blanc Marathon by train or bus will be able to register for the Duo Etoilé, the 90 km, the 42 km and the 23 km of Mont-Blanc without going through the draw. 40% of race numbers are affected by this new measure, and the remaining 60% are dedicated to the usual draw.
In 2024, 23% of runners said they were already coming to Chamonix by train or bus. Our approach is therefore designed to accelerate an emerging trend. Although alternatives such as walking, cycling or electric cars are also more virtuous, they still account for few journeys (2% for walking/biking, 7% for electric cars). For 2025, our priority is therefore to reduce car use (36%) by promoting public transport.
It's not always easy to do without our car. But we're as aware of the limits of the public transport network and the difficulties of using it as we are of the state of the glaciers and the need to protect them. Taking the train or bus to come to Chamonix is much more than a carbon issue, it's also a way of reducing the number of cars in our beautiful valley!
Aware that this initiative raises questions about other modes of transport (electric cars, car-sharing, cycling, walking...), this is a first step. We are already working on solutions to include these more sustainable practices, with the hope of integrating them as early as 2026.
We also understand that some participants will not be able to opt for these alternatives. For them, the majority (60%) of race numbers will remain accessible via the random draw.
We are doing our utmost to facilitate access to the event by public transport, with the hope of setting up dedicated solutions. We will also be communicating on the opening of SNCF ticket offices to obtain the best rates.
The aim is not to penalize, but to reward good practice while offering a fair chance to those with fewer transport options.
The best way to protect the mountains is to choose the right way to get there!
